Would you like to sit down?

Would you like to sit down?

Installation, 2020

Statement:
The idea for this piece originated with a chair that had the center piece where you would sit removed. This made me think about what to replace the center with that could be ironic or funny.  I decided to make the seat a pair of hands, hoping it would instill the “sitter” with a sense of decision making.  I wanted the viewer to have to think about if they really wanted to sit or not. Throughout a normal day, a person sits down in a chair multiple times, but never consciously thinks about it.  I believe this chair would be different because the ‘sitter’ would more than likely be making a conscious decision to sit on a pair of hands.
