Florence von Grote

Statement:
Tying into my general interest of creating utopian space through imagined landscapes, I decided to investigate the places I’ve lived in so far – Bavaria, London, Mexico City and Portland, OR. By representing these real places as dreamscapes, I was intending to highlight the surreal quality life takes on when you leave your home for another place. A person separated from their home changes as they are influenced by other cultures and customs.

Although overall a positive experience, there’s a feeling of disconnection and fragmentation as memories start to disappear. I’m interested in how our memories recreate a new version of our life experiences and how we chose to emphasize certain moments, objects, people, and feelings over others.
