Statement:
For many months I tried to plan the action I wanted to perform in Death Valley. For my research this place was crucial. It was there that hundreds of western and some cult films were made and impregnated the memory and imagination of Simone de Beauvoir about the North American landscape, and where she visited in company of the film director George Stevens. I designed an analogous device aided by a vintage film projector and a high-powered lamp. I decided to project the phrase “Here lies nostalgia” to allude to a double meaning of the word “lies” in terms of “being in a place” but also referring to an “untruth”.
